Your Layout
My advice is to use two or three colors for your layout. But if you use only one color, my advice is to use the dark & light of that one color you choose — Its like split the color into 2. For example: If I’m using the color pink. I’m going to split it into 2 more colors, darker pink & light pink. Also, don’t use a color that is too light & too dark. Make sure you can see it clearly — also, with text colors.

COLORS TO AVOID:
WARNING: The following colors combined together might hurt your eyes.
1) text here(gray&red together).
2) text here(pink&blue together).
3) text here(blue&violet together).
4) text here(blue&red together).
5) text here(red&pink together).

An Image header that is too big takes up a very long time to load and might get your visitor pissed off. Make sure to use .JPG as the format of your image header. It will make it faster to load, than using .PNG as the format of your image header. Also make sure you use 800 width & 600 height as the size of your image header — not more than that. So that it wont be too big or too small.

The font of your layout must not be too small or too big. The average size is 10px. Make sure you add ‘line-height:10px;’ on your css/style sheet to make it looks even better. Also, the font-family shouldn’t be that hard to read like those text here(times new roman with -2px letter spacing), small fonts etc.

The width of the div shouldn’t be too skinny or too biggie. The average size is 350px - 400px. Don’t make it the same size as the sidebar.
The sidebar should be about 150px width. The height shouldn’t be a problem, set it to ‘auto’. So it you dont need to keep changing the height, if the content doesnt fit on it.

The Contents & Updates
My advice is don’t put too much. Just ones you think that a visitor will only use or that is useful.
Make sure that you let them read the rules. Don’t make the rules too long or too big. Make it easier for them to understand and to read.
Don’t let them find the magic word to click to send them to the right content’s page or password to let them in to the page, so that you know that they read the rules. It will just annoy them and might not want to come back to your site. Make it easier for them to view your content — you don’t want a site like that do you?

Update 2-3 times a week, not too much. If you really dont have a time to go online, then you better quit or just be on hiatus. But my advice is; when its school holidays or just holidays, you should update daily and visit & comment every sites you visited. So that you’ll be back on track — thats what I do. Remember that internet is not your life, you’ve got lots more to do — more constructive.

Another advice on updates is to try and blog something about you. Like what happen to you today, new stuffs you made for your visitors etc. Visitors always want know whats going on to the owner or to the site.

Site Hits & Visitors
To get lots of visitors or unique hits a day, my advice is when you visited a site, you should leave a related comment to that site. Because they might comment back on your site and explore your site. That way you get lots of unique hits. Another advice is, if you visited a site apply for affiliate. Thats another way of getting hits/visitors & lots of affiliates. You might need to apply or join for free/paid advertising, button exchanges, tag games, sotm’s, topsites, plugboards & also forums. There might be more contest for you to join, lots of them if you explore the net.

Contest
Visitors will like joining to those sotm’s(site of the month), submitting their links to plugboard etc. So a good idea is to add those sort of stuffs on your site. Here’s the list of contest you might have:
- Site of the month
- Reviews
- Free domain contest(you need to buy the winner a free domain)
- Plugboard(any size; 88×31,468×60, 15×15 etc. buttons)
- Topsites
- Forums / MB
- Layout Contest
- Graphic Contest
and lots more… You need to be more creative if you make your own unique contest.

Also, its a good idea joining those sort of stuffs from another sites.
